stop & smell the roses: a metaphor to live by

The days seem to fly by. In the winter months, we tend to embrace the passing of the short days and long nights. At least I do. This past winter, Seasonal Affective Disorder hit me early and hard.

Exactly one year ago, I was finalizing new-hire onboarding with my trusty sidekicks at the museum for a major exhibition and the months that followed are a blur.

I realized this yesterday and then I had the abhorrent thought of – where did the last year of my life go?

Working in nonprofit and studying for a master’s degree in public administration has taught me to be “mission driven” – in my organization and personal life.

While I am still trying to figure out what my “mission” is, I have adopted a new way of approaching my free time so that I do not find myself as overwhelmed with stressors, household chores and other tasks.

Living in a digital age, we’re so accustom to rapid pace in all aspects. Don’t feel like grocery shopping or too busy to do so? Order online and pick them up on your way home. I like to refer to this as the Amazon Effect.

While the efficiency is convenient and arguably gives us more time, we often to forget to stop and smell the roses.
